Zoe’s First Stay in the Hospital

November 19, 2007 8:11 am

Zoe had her first stay in the hospital after a visit to the E.R. on Thursday Nov. 19th. Kris was taking her to the doctor’s office for a flu shot, just a few days after a visit to the allergist who determined that Zoe isn’t allergic to anything that they test for (the sixteen most common inside and outside allergens) when Zoe started coughing and couldn’t stop or catch her breath. Kris said it was absolutely horrible. She pulled in to the E.R. at the hospital and, with the help of Zoe’s big brother, got her inside just in time for Zoe to vomit up her spaghetti O’s she had for lunch (all over Kris and the floor!)

The E.R. staff quickly gave her a breathing treatment and got her in order but were unable to get her Pulse Oxygen level where it needed to be (above 90%) so they admitted her. I was at work when Kris called me to let me know the bad news. I left as soon as possible and got over to the hospital.

They had Zoe on oxygen with a tube under her nose, like the ones you see on elderly people. It absolutely broke my heart to see her wearing that thing and breathing as fast as she was; over 50 times a minute.

I asked the doctor if this type of thing is common and she told me that half of her patients were in for this exact reason. The air quality has been bad and this just made it worse.

I have never felt such a feeling of sorrow as to see my own child struggling to breathe. I kept asking God to switch me with her and would have done anything to make it happen. The good news is that Saturday night at 5:30, she went home. She is on more medicine than I care to give her but her health is what is important.

I’m just so happy to see her back in good health and playing and smiling and jumping up and down!
